I'll provide the book titles, you provide the apple cider. I have what you need! This October book list is full of picture books, poetry and chapter books to read aloud during the month of pumpkins, magic, colorful leaf piles and brisk breezes. The ending is a bit rosy, but readers will appreciate Kestrel’s making her way out of the woods and onto a better future. Are you wondering what you should read to your children in October? The month of ever increasing chilly nights and ever decreasing hours of sunlight? Well. The oppressiveness of the forest and the ticking time bomb that is Kestrel’s increasingly present Grabber work together to create nailbiting tension, and the plot twist involving Kestrel’s mother sheds a different and even more menacing light on their relationship. This is bone-tingling scary, with Kestrel facing off against a host of horrors, including the bloated, corpselike Briny Witch, a spidery, clownish face painter, and of course her mother, who gleefully threatens and abuses her. The woods beyond the village boundaries, however, may hide hideous monsters but also keep secrets, secrets that may change Kestrel’s fate-if she can defeat her own Grabber first. At twelve years old, Kestrel has spent most of her childhood training with her brutal grandmother to be a hunter now her terrifying mage mother sends her out against the Grabbers. The forest surrounding Kestrel’s village is filled with untold horrors, but the worst by far are the Grabbers, creatures who shape themselves as a person’s deepest fear before stalking, kidnapping, and likely killing their victim.
